Weddings photographers and Vegas.

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

Today I and many other wedding photographers will arrive in Las Vegas for the annual wedding photographers convention.  I guess this is where I’m supposed to say “Woot!!!”

Ok, so maybe I’m not the biggest fan of Las Vegas, but there are aspects of it that do amuse me. Take the billboard below, for instance. How can you resist such temptations?  They’ve got me with that $3 hot dog and a beer.  Now I don’t have to swing by 7-Eleven on the way to the trade show.

Q Weddings Still Loves Film, yessiree!

Friday, March 5th, 2010

I’m thrilled to be the inaugural post on Richard Photo Lab’s new blog, Still Love Film.

It’s nice to have film friends and such talented ones at that!

Here’s a lovely moment from a wedding reception.  High speed black and white film is a nice departure from strobe-driven candids.

I’m part of Crave Austin, a book about women-owned businesses.

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

I’m pleased to say that I took part in creating Crave Austin, a book featuring women-owned businesses here in Austin.  I photographed many businesses including the ones shown here:

Underwear (a boutique selling fine undergarments)

Sabia Apothecary and Spa (a beauty spa)

Solid Gold (a clothing boutique)

Room Fu (an interior design firm)

I even had an official portrait done for the book.  I’m drinking espresso (of course!).  Photo by the talented Jen Downer of She Saw Things.

One year ago today, photographing a groom climbing the stairs.

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

One year ago today, I was photographing Mark, the groom climbing the stairs.  The fact that he agreed to climb the stairs amazed me.  Then I had to huff and puff up the stairs after him.  From Stephanie and Mark’s Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center wedding.

One year ago today, I was photographing a cemetery wedding.

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

A year ago today, I photographed Tobi and Dick’s wedding in a graveyard.  When I first showed the images on this blog, I may have omitted the fact that my leg was in an aircast.  I kept tripping over gravestones, but hey, other than that, what a dedicated little photographer I am.

Fashionable?  Now that’s a whole other discussion.

You can see the cemetery wedding here on the Q Blog.

Thanks to Alina Prax of La Dolce Vita Photography for taking this photo and for holding my crutches while I shot.

Laguna Gloria white wedding with touches of willow browns.

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

Laguna Gloria was the setting for a pretty white wedding with touches of willow browns.  The bride and groom, Ashley and Ryan, are high school sweethearts and have been together for 13 years.  It was a happy moment for them to finally get married.  They are in sync and obviously totally in love too.  I think that’s why their wedding went so well.  They knew what they wanted:  an elegant, timeless event.

The white on white theme was perfect for that. Then they added a little contemporary flair with the willow lights and hardwood chargers.  And one more great ingredient for this classy, laidback event was a live jazz trio with a lovely 92-year-old vocalist, Donna Hightower.  Great dancing music.  In fact, not only did Ashley and Ryan have a first dance, they also had a last dance, all to themselves while everyone assembled outside for the send-off with bubbles.  The last dance was a nice touch, just them enjoying each other.  I wish more people would do this!

Special thank you to Alina Prax of La Dolce Vita Photography for shooting with me.  The wide shot of the cake, looking through the doorways?  That’s hers.  Great atmospheric shot.  Talk about talent!

Day After Wedding Portraits on a farm.

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

Here’s some playful Day After Wedding Portraits on a farm in Illinois.  I love it when people book Day After Portraits because it’s so laidback.  People are relaxed after the whirlwind of the wedding is over.  There’s no timeline to be mindful of, plus there’s the blissful feeling of finally being married.  For Trudianne and Billy, we especially wanted overalls in the pictures.  Billy wears “Key Imperial, the Aristocrat of Overalls”.  I was having some serious overalls envy!  We got to goofing around and added some guns and Billy’s ever present cigar.

An outdoor wedding at Cherry Lane Farm in Marengo, Illinois.

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

Trudianne and Billy’s outdoor wedding was at Cherry Lane Farm in Marengo, Illinois.  I met Trudianne at Jenifer and Scott’s Michigan wedding last year.  She was the bagpiper and Billy was at the wedding too.  In fact, halfway through the ceremony, he gasped audibly when he saw me putting a fresh roll of film in my camera.  He was thrilled and wanted to know all about it after the ceremony was done.  It’s gratifying when I know that people still appreciate us film shooters!

Back then, Trudianne and Billy told me they weren’t really interested in ever getting married.  They met at the same skydiving facility (they’re both experienced jumpers) and were just having a great time being in love.  They are such a happy couple.  So I was jazzed when they changed their minds…but of course, on their terms.  I would expect no less from these two fascinating, independent thinkers.  Here’s a very different kind of wedding:

They decided to do a handfast, which is a simple, binding ceremony.  It took place outdoors on a stunning October day in a clearing on their farm.  They collected many mementos of significance from around the farm, such as seeds, an old nest, feathers, twigs, a lantern, a plate, etc.  They invited their dearest friends and family to gather in a circle and bless the union.  The handfast acknowledges “the land, ancestors and the divine” and included the four elements of Air, Fire, Water and Earth.

The start of the day was when Billy took everyone on a hay ride over to a tree in the middle of a pasture where Trudianne and Billy had hung their wedding rings for three days.  Then Trudianne and Billy went and got into their fancy clothes for the handfasting ceremony.  After the ceremony, everyone walked over to the big red barn and enjoyed a feast prepared by Trudianne’s mom, Trudi and Billy’s dear friend, Deb.  There were many dishes featuring food grown on the farm, plus a cheese bar created by Deb, with little signs about the cheese and what to pair with them.  (I just saw a cheese dessert bar on Martha Stewart’s Wedding Blog, so Deb is on the cutting edge of wedding trends!).  They even garnished the meal with flowers from around the farm.

After the feast, everyone gathered around a big bonfire for hot cocoa, scotch and cigars, and some guitar playing.  As always, I was grateful for being included in such a special day.

Cherry Lane Farm in Marengo, Illinois.

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Cherry Lane Farm in Marengo, Illinois is a farm that I recently visited.  I was there to photograph Trudianne and Billy’s wedding ceremony.  They invited me to stay a few days and asked me to photograph the farm in exchange for all the fresh eggs I could eat.  Who could pass up such an offer?  Tomorrow, the wedding, but today, please enjoy the special beauty of the farm.
