a zaffa at a summer wedding at Brooklyn Botanical Garden

March 26th, 2014

The Bride’s Cafe is featuring Emma and Kareem’s summer wedding that we photographed at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.  After a serene outdoor ceremony under a giant willow tree, the celebration moved into the Palm House.  To kick it up a notch and to honor Kareem’s Egyptian heritage, a zaffa was planned.

What is a zaffa?  It’s the best! An über enthusiastic wedding march for the bride and groom’s big entrance.  It includes musicians, belly dancers, limbo dancing under a cane, tossing the groom in the air, clapping and dancing on the part of all the wedding guests and lots of coin throwing…special coins that flutter through the air…I kept finding them in my camera bag weeks after the wedding.  Made me chuckle every time.

A Brooklyn flower shoot on The Bride’s Cafe

March 25th, 2014

I am so wowed by The Bride’s Cafe, they are featuring a Brooklyn flower shoot that I did with two talented florists, Denise Fasanello in Brooklyn and Brooke Howsley of Pollen Floral Art here in Austin. The Bride’s Cafe described the day perfectly…please go take a look at the feature!

Denise, Brooke and I had just finished collaborating on a wedding the day before, but we rallied when we saw the beautiful flowers in the Flower District in Manhattan. The results prove it, look at these amazing arrangements (including kumquats!) by Denise and Brooke.

Random acts of kindness

March 20th, 2014

I don’t often crave external validation, so I was trying to figure out what felt so good about being named a Top Photographer by Martha Stewart Weddings. Here’s what it is: I didn’t nominate myself or enter a contest. The good people at Martha decided, out of the blue, to bestow this honor on me. To have someone you respect notice your hard work, wow, that just made it ten times more incredible! I guess I am accepting this external validation wholeheartedly.

It made me think of Shawn Achor’s TED Talk on happiness. There’s a list of five things you can do to feel more positive and one of them was random acts of kindness. Write an email to someone you know, praising or thanking them for just being them. It will make them feel better and you will also benefit. There’s something wonderful about sending “ripples of positivity” into the world!
